The car thermostat is a kind of switch element that controls the temperature in the car air-conditioning system. It senses the surface temperature of the evaporator, thereby controlling the start and stop of the compressor, which plays the role of regulating the temperature in the car and preventing the evaporator from frosting. Any liquid-cooled car engine has a small device called a thermostat that sits between the engine and the radiator.
When the temperature in the car rises to a certain set range value, the temperature switch contact of the thermostat is closed, the electromagnetic clutch is connected, and the compressor works. When the temperature in the car drops to a certain set value, the contact of the temperature switch is disengaged, the current of the electromagnetic clutch is interrupted, and the compressor will stop working.
There are roughly three types of thermostats on the market today: bellows type, bimetallic type and thermistor type. There is a set temperature adjustment screw connected to the cam in the thermostat. When the screw is turned clockwise, the extension spring is tightened, and the contact can be closed only when the temperature is higher, that is, the temperature in the car is adjusted higher. An eccentric spring in the thermostat adjusts the temperature range over which the contacts open (i.e. the opening time) so that there is enough time for the evaporator to not freeze.
Most car thermostats are about five centimeters in diameter, and their role is to stop coolant from flowing into the radiator until the engine has warmed up. When the engine is not hot, the coolant does not flow through the engine. Once the engine reaches its operating temperature (about 95°C), the thermostat will open. By allowing the engine to warm up as quickly as possible, the thermostat reduces engine wear, deposits and emissions.
